Speak well and be understood – in a different language
Many say the best way to learn a language is to live among the people who speak the language. The latest Citarasa Kini (meaning “Contemporary Tastes”) offerings give you that opportunity to learn two new languages spoken by people around you - Bahasa Indonesia and Mandarin.
A “modern” language
Bahasa Indonesia is the official language of Indonesia. It officially came into being only in 1945, with the Indonesian delcaration of independence. In fact, Bahasa Indonesia literally means “language of Indonesia”. As Bahasa Indonesia is a standardised dialect of the Malay language, the two languages remain quite similar. The pholology and grammer of Bahasa Indonesia are also relatively simple and easy to pick up.
An ancient civilisation
China being one of the earliest centres of human civilisation, the Chinese language was one of the few languages to invent writing independently. Mandarin is often ranked as one of the most difficult languages to pick up. One reason is that Mandarin is a tonal language, where different pitch patterns add emotional colour, and in fact, distinguish one word from another. However it is also simple because unlike English and some other European languages, Mandarin has no irregular verbs or noun plurals to learn, because words have only a single form, with no suffixes for tense, number, case, etc.
